RIPTA bus driver charged after confronting woman driver

A RIPTA bus driver is on paid administrative leave after he allegedly confronted a woman in her car about her cell phone use.

The incident happened Friday in Middletown.

According to a police report, 57-year-old Edward Howell, of Tiverton, left his bus and yelled at a woman stopped at a red light.

Witnesses said Howell tried to open her door, and pounded on the car's roof.

Howell faces disorderly conduct charges as well as a vandalism charge.

RIPTA released a statement that said, "we expect all of our operators to act in an appropriate manner and we are investigating the manner."
