NEWPORT, R.I. -

Two Portsmouth brothers are accused of giving alcohol to minors at a Fourth of July party. Police said they went to their party to investigate a sexual assault reportedly committed by another man.

Connor Gammons, 23, and his brother, Taylor Gammons, 22, were arraigned Thursday in Newport District Court on charges of violating the state’s social host law. They pleaded not guilty to giving alcohol to a 19-year-old man.

"My clients had nothing to do with any underage drinking," said attorney Emile Martineau, who represents Connor Gammons.

Martineau said the brothers are young professionals who threw an Independence Day party at their Bayview Avenue home for their friends.

Police said that's not what they found when they dropped by the house at about 1:45 a.m. July 5.

NBC 10 tried to get a copy of the police report but could not because officers say it’s linked to their ongoing sexual assault investigation. Detective Lt. A.J. Bucci said officers only showed up to the party to follow up on a sexual assault report.

The alleged victim is a 21-year-old woman who attended the party. The alleged perpetrator is a 19-year-old man, possibly the same man to whom the Gammonses allegedly gave alcohol.

Police won't say where the reported assault took place, but Martineau said it has nothing to do with his client and his brother.

"Let me be very clear," Martineau said. "There's nothing in the police report that alleges any type of assault occurred on their property or at their house … I wouldn't say they are related at all."

Police said they're also investigating thefts from that night. A partygoer reported his OxyContin medication was stolen, and Connor Gammons reported his $5,000 watch disappeared.
