Patrick: No final decision on sheltering migrants

Posted: Updated:

BOSTON (AP) - Gov. Deval Patrick says he has still not made a final decision on whether Massachusetts will shelter some of the unaccompanied children crossing the nation's southern border illegally.

Patrick did confirm on Thursday that the Camp Edwards military base on Cape Cod was among the possible sites being considered for a secure detention facility. The governor said he did not expect the state to host more than a "few hundred" children.

During an unrelated visit to the Cape, Patrick acknowledged concerns of some municipal officials about adequate funding should some children enroll in public schools. He repeated that the federal government would cover costs associated with housing.

Massachusetts House Republican leader Brad Jones said Thursday he would convene a summit at the Statehouse next week to discuss issues associated with what he called a "national immigration crisis."
