Rhode Island's unemployment rate dropped to 7.9 percent in June, but the state shed several hundred jobs.
The state Department of Labor and Training reported Thursday that the unemployment rate fell three-tenths of 1 point from May to its lowest level since July 2008.
The number of jobs in Rhode Island was down by 400 from revised May estimates to 477,100. Overall, the state has added 5,900 jobs in the first half of the year.
Meanwhile, the number of employed residents was up 3,200, to 515,400. The size of the labor force was up 1,800 in June, to 559,600. That's an increase of 2,900 from a year ago.
The U.S. unemployment rate for June was 6.1 percent.
The jobless rate in Rhode Island in June of 2013 was 9.5 percent.
