PROVIDENCE -

A man who police have called a career criminal appeared in Superior Court in Providence on Wednesday to face murder charges.

Brian Audette, 45, is accused of killing a 57-year-old Woonsocket woman in April 2013.

Police said Audette admitted to the murder but in court on Wednesday the public defender entered a not guilty plea on his behalf.

Police said Audette admitted he killed Donna Pike at her Woonsocket home.

According to a police report, Audette admitted he and Pike had a sexual relationship and that he beat her with a blunt object after drinking half a pint of vodka the night of her murder.

In the report, officers said he also admitted that he left her there bleeding, knowing she would not survive the night.

Police said Audette has been in and out of prison since 1989. A friend of Audette's told investigators that Audette was not adjusting well to society and wanted to go back to prison.

Audette was on probation for a 2000 robbery charge at the time of the killing. He's currently being held at the Adult Correctional Institutions serving the rest of his time for violating the terms of probation.

Audette is due back in court for a pretrial hearing Oct. 16.
