Rhode Island State Police have arrested an employee of the state Department of Corrections on two felony charges.

State police detectives claim 53-year-old security specialist Gerald Masso of North Providence fraudulently used state money.

Masso is accused of using a corrections line of credit at a police supply company to buy ammunition for personal use.

The charges involve the purchase of $1,553 worth of ammunition in September 2012 and the purchase of $3,128 worth of ammunition in January 2013.

Masso was arrested Friday and arraigned on the charges. He was released on $10,000 personal recognizance.

Corrections Director A.T. Wall asked detectives to investigate Masso in March after an internal investigation uncovered potential criminal activity.

That investigation followed an NBC 10 I-Team report about a séance held in the office of a high-level corrections official. Sources told I-Team reporter Parker Gavigan that Masso had attended that seance while on state time.

A conviction on the charges could carry a fine of $50,000 and up to 20 years in prison.

Masso is an 18-year employee of the Department of Corrections.

Masso is scheduled back in court for a pre-arraignment conference on Sept. 11.

He remains on paid leave from the state.
