Lightning strikes 7 firefighters

Posted: Updated:

Seven firefighters were checked for injuries after lightning struck nearby as they battled a blaze in Vermont.

According to a posting on the Guilford Volunteer Fire Department's Facebook page, firefighters from that company and others were working on a structure fire around 4 p.m. Wednesday when lightning hit "in close proximity."

Michael Travisano, the nursing supervisor at Brattleboro Memorial Hospital, says none of the injuries were serious.

The Facebook posting says four firefighters from Guilford, two from Chesterfield, New Hampshire, and one from Bernardston, Massachusetts, were evaluated at the hospital and later released.

It says the house was a total loss and the homeowner is staying with relatives.

Severe storms rolled through the Northeast and New England on Wednesday, spawning heavy rains and lightning.
