PROVIDENCE -

A Rhode Island company has been making the shin guards used by many of the players in this year's World Cup soccer tournament.

Providence-based G-Form makes protective sports equipment using a technology that allows its products to stiffen on impact, dissipating energy.

Soccer legend Pele tweeted out a video featuring the company's shin guards and said, "they will change the future for many players."

"I mean it's huge for us. A company like G-Form making its mark on a player like Pele, companies dream for something like that. So for this company from Rhode Island, we are proud of what we've developed. And to have somebody of his level recognize what it is and what we are doing to change the game, it's the highest level of us," said Thomas Cafaro, VP of innovations at G-Form.

The company's shin guards are being used by many international players.

"The relationships that we have developed with over 20 players' unions around the world and they are representing thousands of professional players. So we know that there are tens of thousands of professional players that use the new G-Form shin guard. How many of them are in the World Cup is hard to put our finger on," Cafaro said.

According to the Providence Journal, American players are not using the products because the U.S. team is sponsored by Nike.

G-Form began in Providence in 2010 with five employees. It now has about 130 at its North Smithfield plant.

It also makes protective equipment for football, hockey, skateboarding, bicycling and other sports.
