Patients in two ERs may have been exposed to measles

PROVIDENCE - In a press release from the Department of Health, a patient was seen at two Rhode Island hospitals and treated for measles last Sunday, and now urges anyone who may have come into contact with the patient to watch for symptoms of the virus.

According to the Department of Health, The first potential exposure took place on the morning of Sunday, June 22 at the Rhode Island Hospital Emergency Department where a man presented with fever, fatigue, nausea, and aches. According to Rhode Island Hospital, the patient left against medical advice.

Later that day, he presented to the Emergency Department at Roger Williams Medical Center with continuing fever. He was admitted, and during his stay he developed a high-grade fever and rash. On June 25, he was discharged to home isolation. On June 27, the diagnosis of measles was confirmed by laboratory tests.

The Department of Health believes potential exposure may have happened in the Emergency department of Rhode Island Hospital on Sunday, June 22 from 3:00 a.m. - 6:00 a.m., and also at the Roger Williams Medical Center emergency room on Sunday, June 22 from 6:30 p.m. to 10:00 p.m.

In a statement from Rhode Island Hospital, the hospital has notified any patients that may have been exposed to the contagious disease by phone and mail.

Measles looks and feels like a cold at first. Cough, high fever, runny nose, and red, watery eyes are common. These symptoms start ten to fourteen days after exposure. The Health Department is now urging anyone who may have come into contact with the patient to seek medical attention if they display any signs of the contagious virus.
