A street in Providence now bears the name of one of the city's veteran police officers.

Officer John Reposa Jr. was killed last year in a motorcycle crash in Jamestown. The 43-year-old officer was off-duty.

Members of his family joined police and city leaders Friday to rename an entry street to the District 6 Substation in Reposa's memory.

"Johnny was all cop," said Col. Hugh Clements. "He was tough when he had to be tough, and he was compassionate when he had to be compassionate."

"This will memorialize what Johnny was about. He was a real Providence cop with a big, big smile. He would do anything for anyone," said Public Safety Commissioner Steven Pare.

Reposa was a 19-year veteran of the Providence Police Department. He served on the motorcycle squad, in the patrol division, and in the traffic and narcotics bureaus.
