WEST WARWICK, R.I. -

Surveillance video obtained by NBC 10 shows the seconds leading up to a two-car crash in West Warwick that sent three adults and two children to the hospital.

"I look in my rearview mirror, I see a car going out of control, swerving back and forth," Manuel Andrade told NBC 10 on Tuesday night.

Andrade said he was nearly a victim that night, but he pulled to the side of the road and let the driver pass him. The crash happened seconds later in front of the gas station on Providence Street where Mario David works.

David, who set up the security cameras at the gas station, showed NBC 10 the footage of the crash.

"When I watched the video, I said, 'Wow, very high speeds,'" David said.

David said cars driving on Providence Street are typically moving no faster than 25 or 30 mph. This one, he said, was different.

The video shows cars passing by in both directions at consistent speeds. One car comes along, moving much more quickly than those before it, before slamming into a car that approaches from the opposite direction.

"The way the crash happened, the vehicle was in such bad shape that they couldn't just open the doors and get them out, so they had to cut the roof off and extricate them from the vehicle," West Warwick police Detective Sgt. Scott Amaral told NBC 10 at the scene Tuesday night.

All five people in both cars were taken to the hospital with severe injuries, but police said they did not believe the injuries were life-threatening.

As of Thursday afternoon, West Warwick Police are not releasing any additional information about what caused the crash.
