NARRAGANSETT, R.I. -

Maine has lobster, Massachusetts has cod and Rhode Island has calamari.

Gov. Lincoln Chafee has planned a signing ceremony Friday for legislation that makes the squid dish the state's official appetizer.

Rep. Joseph McNamara and Sen. Susan Sosnowski both sponsored bills to do so this year. Last year's effort to give calamari an official status stalled on the Senate side.

The legislation is designed to recognize the importance of the squid fishing industry to the state economy as well as promote Rhode Island's food and tourism industries.

The ceremony will be held at the town dock in Narragansett.

The quahog was previously named Rhode Island's official state shell.
