A Rhode Island State Police trooper has pleaded no contest to using physical force against a man detained on a traffic violation.

Trooper James Donnelly-Taylor, 38, of Warwick, was sentenced Monday in Kent County District Court to a one-year filing and ordered to perform 25 hours of community service.

A filing is when the case is put aside for a year and if the person stays out of trouble for a year, then the case is eligible to be expunged and destroyed.

Donnelly-Taylor assaulted Lionel Monsanto on Feb. 26 after arresting him for driving with an expired license.

Donnelly-Taylor, who has been with the state police for five years, has been suspended with pay.
