Marine from NH who fought school policy killed in Afghanistan

Posted: Updated:

A Marine from New Hampshire who gained fame was killed in the line of duty.

The Pentagon said 19-year-old Lance Cpl. Brandon Garabrant of Peterborough was killed in combat Friday in Afghanistan.

Garabrant was assigned to 2nd Combat Engineer Battalion in Camp Lejeune, North Carolina.

Fox News reported that Garabrant made headlines last year when he asked to wear his dress blues at his graduation from ConVal Regional High School. Citing school policy, administrators denied his request and said he had to wear a cap and gown.

A message from the principal on the school website said, "We are all shocked and deeply saddened by his passing and are incredibly grateful for his service to our country."

Two of Garabrant's fellow Marines were killed in the same attack. The Pentagon said they were Staff Sgt. David Stewart, 34, of Virginia, and Lance Cpl. Adam Wolff, 25, of Iowa.
