Man sentenced to 70 years in Providence shooting

Posted: Updated:

The attorney general said Friday that a Providence man was sentenced to serve 70 years in prison for shooting a rival.

The shooting happened Dec. 1, 2012, in the Chad Brown Section of Providence.

Prosecutors said Jose Lopez shot Jorge Semiday in the leg when Semiday tried to intervene in a confrontation between Lopez and his ex-girlfriend, Maribel Bonet-Perez.

Lopez then tried to shoot Perez several times, but the gun failed to go off.

Prosecutors said the woman and Semiday escaped when Lopez stopped to reload the gun.

Lopez, 37, was convicted in March of two counts of assault with a dangerous weapon and other charges.
