A bill to offer options in the construction of affordable housing has passed the General Assembly.
The legislation allows for several different methods of reaching the 10% goal for affordable housing in Rhode Island cities and towns.
Current law mandates that any community zoning that requires affordable housing must include that less than 10% of the units be affordable, and stay affordable for at least 30 years.
The new legislation allows for developers to build the affordable housing units on-site, provide the units through off-site rehabilitation, or pay a fee, in lieu of construction, to the community.
For the last choice, fees will be paid on a per-unit basis, and be used towards creating affordable housing.
While only one community has achieved their affordable housing goal (New Shoreham), many communities are shown as making good, or adequate progress.
