Rhode Island's General Assembly has approved the 2014 Student and Employee Social Media Privacy acts, designed to protect information citizens wish to keep private.

In particular, employers will not be able to demand social media material from potential hires; and a similar restriction will be put in place for colleges and universities reviewing students.

That includes log-in information, or requiring the applicant to log-in, so the employer can view the online content.

The legislation also includes a measure called the Student Data-Cloud Computing Act, barring educational institutions from using cloud-based student information for commercial reasons.

The bills now go to the Governor's desk for final approval.
