CLEARWATER, FL (WFLA) - A red light camera recorded a frightening crash that sent a motorcyclist cartwheeling through a Clearwater intersection. Amazingly, the motorcyclist walked away from the crash.

Clearwater Police say it happened around 3:44 p.m. on May 24.

A 2003 Mitsubishi Galant driven by Alex Jay Hall, 27, of St. Petersburg was headed south on Belcher Road and attempting to turn east on Gulf to Bay Boulevard when his car collided with a motorcycle driven by Michael Curtis Smith, 22, of Clearwater, which was traveling north on Belcher Road.

Hall was cited for making an improper left turn and driving with a suspended license without knowledge. He told police the light turned red and he was already in the intersection, so he began his turn.

Smith was cited for not having a motorcycle endorsement. He told police the light was still green and the car turned in front of him and it was too late for him to stop.

The police report said there were no injuries in the crash.

Just four days prior, a crossing guard was killed at the same intersection when a car sped through a red light and hit him. More details

Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission is changing management rules of invasive lionfish to remove them from state waters. Lionfish was introduced to state waters in the 1980s, and since then, populations have boomed in recent years, negatively impacting native wildlife and habitat, the FWC says.
