Police: No criminal wrongdoing in Central Coventry Fire District

Posted: Updated:

The Rhode Island State Police and the Rhode Island Attorney General's Office said they've finished a probe of the Central Coventry Fire District. As a result of the investigation, authorities have found no reason for criminal charges in the case.

The investigation began in January 2013, when a letter of complaint from the town's state lawmakers was sent to the attorney general's office.

Investigators focused on potential criminal activity that may have caused the receivership and potential bankruptcy of the Fire District.

The probe showed the district suffered from an error in a commercial fire tax assessment, compounded over a two-year period.

State police said the error led to a deficiency of $1.6 million in the operating budget.
