WARWICK, R.I. -

A $6 million federal grant will help the Rhode Island Airport Corp. expand and build new fields for the Apponaug Girls Softball League.

The airport is expanding a runway to allow for larger planes that could allow for West Coast and international flights.

The league says it first got word the expansion would take precedence over its fields in the mid- 2000s. For years the softball league didn't know where the fields would go, but the grant money means they'll move to the northeast side of the airport.

The money will pay for a new sport complex including six softball fields, three soccer fields, walking trails and a new concession stand. The league might be able to move into the new facilities as early as June 2015.
