Beachgoers warned of dangerous rip currents

Posted: Updated:
WESTPORT, Mass. - Summer is just around the corner and water safety is something all beachgoers need to be aware of.

As enticing as the water can be, it can also be potentially dangerous, when a rip current occurs. The National Weather Service was at Horseneck Beach in Westport in June to raise awareness about the dangers of rip currents.

According to the U.S. Lifesaving Association, about 80% of beach rescues are because of rip currents. Annually, about one hundred people die from drowning when caught in a current.
