Sex offender wanted in Mass. captured in Florida

TAUNTON, Mass. -

Level 3 sex offender James Bowen is now in custody in Florida, more than a month after police in Taunton said he ran from, and tried to run over, a state trooper.

Taunton police told NBC 10 the trooper tried to serve a warrant on Bowen at his last address in Taunton in April.

Police said as Bowen drove off, he took off a GPS monitoring device he was supposed to be wearing and threw it out of the car.

Police also said they then discovered Bowen was not living where he had claimed to be living as a registered sex offender.

The 50-year-old hadn't been seen since, until Thursday.

U.S. Marshals along with the Massachusetts State Police Violent Fugitive Apprehension Section took him into custody in Daytona Beach.

Bowen has a history with that Massachusetts State Police fugitive unit.

Nearly a year ago, the unit tracked him to a hotel in Providence and teamed up with the Rhode Island State Police to take him into custody.

But it wasn't easy.

According to a Rhode Island State Police news release last June, Bowen refused to come out of his room at the Providence Marriott when troopers arrived.

Instead, they said he locked himself in the room with the deadbolt and threatened to shoot himself.

In that incident last June, Bowen finally surrendered after several hours of negotiations.

Police wouldn’t say what led them to Florida to catch Bowen in this latest case.

Bowen is classified as a Level 3 sex offender as the result of a conviction in 2001 on 6 counts of aggravated rape.
