18-year-old selectman has big plans for town

NORTH ATTLEBOROUGH, Mass. -

The message is simple for 18-year-old North Attleboro Selectman Patrick Reynolds. The political enthusiast was elected as a town selectman and his term began two months before his high school graduation.

"I think a lot of people are just set in their ways of: 'It's always been that way, let's keep it that way.' I'm kind of looking at it with fresh ideas and see if we can shake things up," Reynolds told NBC 10.

"What we need in town hall is fresh perspective, new ideas and a vision for innovation."

Reynolds is already shaken up the campaign trail, using the Internet, YouTube video and Facebook to reach the masses. He says he wants to help the town grow its online presence as well, especially in how to get and renew a permit. Along with that, he wants town workers to go green.

"Things like using more electronic things like electronic leaf-blowers and using more fuel-efficient cars for our inspectors and things like that," he says.

And his family and others supported him every step of the way.

"It wasn't just kids. There'd be people in the office, there'd be people at church, there'd be people at his little brother, Thomas' basketball and baseball games talking about Patrick's campaign and asking how it's going," Patrick’s father, Steve Reynolds said.

"It's been pretty cool having people, especially right after the election, congratulate me on Patrick and talk to me about it. It's pretty exciting," Patrick’s brother Thomas told NBC 10.

Patrick will attend Providence College in the fall to study political science, but will remain a stalwart in North Attleboro's Town Hall.

"He'll be there for the next four years and he'll be able to come back to go to meetings and still be a part of our community. I think that's the most important thing," his mother said.
