Officials are recalling about 1.8 million pounds of ground beef products sold for restaurant use in four states that may be contaminated with the bacteria E. coli.

The Rhode Island Department of Health said Tuesday that recalled ground beef products were sent to at least 128 food establishments in the state.

Michigan-based Wolverine Packing Co. is recalling about 1.8 million pounds of ground beef products that may be contaminated with E. coli.

No illnesses have been reported in Rhode Island. There have been 11 illnesses in four states reported, including one in Massachusetts.

The Rhode Island Rhode Island Department of Health says it will not release a list of the establishments because it may not be all-inclusive and because it believes the bulk of the threat has passed.

An official at the Rocky Hill School in East Greenwich said the school was on a distribution list to receive the beef, but it did not. The Health Department said some of the recalled beef could also be in private homes.

The recalled ground beef has the establishment number "EST. 2574B" and will have a production date code in the format "Packing Nos: MM DD 14" between "03 31 14" and "04 18 14."

State health officials said they are concerned about food safety with the Memorial Day weekend coming up.

The Department of Health said recalled products should never be eaten. Ground beef should always be cooked to a minimum of 160 degrees using a meat thermometer due to potential contamination with the bacteria.

E. coli can cause serious illnesses and death, and undercooked ground beef should never be served to children, the Health Department said.

Anyone with symptoms of E. coli, especially bloody diarrhea, should seek medical help, state health officials said.
