PROVIDENCE -

Nancy Stevenin is now gone from her $94,000 a year administrative position with the Providence schools following an I-Team investigation.

Superintendent Susan Lusi announced the resignation in a statement Monday evening, and also new policies aimed at verifying credentials of staff members. Lusi was not willing to answer questions posed by NBC10 Monday night. “The statement stands by itself but I appreciate the opportunity,” Lusi said.

Lusi said last week that Stevenin had been put on a corrective action when her questionable degree from the unaccredited on-line Ashley University was discovered in February. But Lusi said last week to fire her was not the way to go.

Neither Lusi nor Mayor Angel Taveras would say whether Stevenin was forced out now. Taveras told NBC10, “Let me just say that she turned in her resignation and we accepted it. And I think that was appropriate.”

“This is certainly a very loud wake-up call for us in the city and in the school department to make sure that everyone has the proper credentials,” Taveras said. “I've spoken to the superintendent and I think it's important that we make sure this never happens again.”

Asked about Lusi’s earlier willingness to let Stevenin stay, Taveras told NBC10, “As I said, the superintendent is a superintendent that I support. She has my support. I think the decision today was an appropriate one and we now need to move forward and make sure that this doesn't happen again.”

There was no answer at the last known address and phone number NBC10 could find for Stevenin.
