NEWPORT, R.I. -

The owner of a Newport scooter rental company says former New England Patriots tight end Aaron Hernandez and a group of his friends stopped by his business days after double-murder in Boston.

Hernandez was indicted last week on two counts of first-degree murder in the July 16, 2012, shooting deaths of Daniel de Abreu and Safiro Furtado. The victims' bodies were found in an SUV. Prosecutors said Hernandez shot the two men after a chance meeting in a Boston nightclub.

Tom Welby of Scooter World in Newport said four days after the killings, Hernandez came to his business and rented scooters and watercraft. Welby said he remembers the day well. Hernandez was in a good mood and took several pictures with his staff, he said.

"To think that he was here in the store so soon after (the killings) is just really creepy," Welby said.

Welby said he now wonders if Hernandez was in town just having fun or if he rented a watercraft on Newport Harbor for nefarious reasons.

Welby said Hernandez's friend, Carlos Ortiz, was also present. Hernandez and Ortiz are charged with murder in the July 2013 killing of Odin Lloyd, whose body was found about mile from Hernandez's home in North Attleborough.

Welby said he's not sure if Hernandez is guilty or innocent, but he said the allegations are troubling.
