I-Team: Lawyer for Cranston police union is out

CRANSTON, R.I. -

Attorney Joe Rodio is no longer representing the officers of the Cranston police union.

In a letter obtained by the NBC 10 I-Team, the state's director of the International Brotherhood of Police Officers said its national union will no longer pay for Rodio's representation of Local 301.

A new attorney is taking over.

Attempts to reach Rodio for comment Friday were unsuccessful.

The move comes six months after a ticket scandal that has plagued the department.

Capt. Stephen Antonucci is accused of ordering patrol officers to ticket more than 100 cars parked overnight on the streets of two city wards. The wards are represented by two city councilmen who voted against a proposed police contract.

Antonucci admitted ordering the tickets but said he was responding to concerns from residents and council members.

City lawmakers deny the claim.

The councilmen told the I-Team they felt the tickets were retaliation against their votes.

In March, Chief Marco Palumbo retired amid a state police investigation. He had been placed on administrative leave for two months.
