Chief Joseph Tavares of the East Providence Police Department announced his resignation on Tuesday.

The resignation is effective July 1.

Tavares was placed on administrative leave in April 2013, but was reinstated a month later.

The city's budget commission had been investigating complaints about Tavares from members of the department. The complaints weren't disclosed.

He was then hired as chief in East Providence.
