Fire damages multifamily home in Central Falls

Posted: Updated:

A fire on Wednesday afternoon heavily damaged a multifamily home in Central Falls, displacing more than 20 residents.

The fire at 661 Pine St. started at about 4 p.m.

Heavy smoke and flames were seen coming from the upper floors of the building. Fire officials told NBC 10 that the fire started on a porch, and worked its way up to the roof.

Firefighters went into the house when they first arrived, but then were ordered out because of the dangerous conditions. Firefighters from Pawtucket, Lincoln and Cumberland were called to help battle the fire.

Officials said that people were in the home at the time of the fire, but that everyone was able to get out safely.

One resident told NBC 10 that they saw smoke when they looked out the window, and when they looked down, they saw the fire around the porch.

The cause of the fire was not immediately known.

Some residents said they didn't hear the fire alarm go off, or didn't hear it until they got out of the house.

Fire officials said the home will likely be demolished Thursday.

Fire officials said there were some previous issues with the alarm system, but that the owner was having work done and the alarm and sprinklers were working when firefighters showed up.
