PROVIDENCE - Local businesses have been targeted over the week by scammers overseas who are pretending to be National Grid representatives.

Businesses have received phone calls saying their account is currently in collections and their service will be terminated if they do not make a payment over the phone.

National Grid said the calls are fraudulent, and anyone receiving a call from National Grid should hang up and call the utility back directly to verify the validity of the claim.

Scammers are directing callers to call 1-888-214-9147 to make payment on overdue gas and electric bills. If you receive a call, please call National Grid to report incident and do not give any personal, account, or billing information over the phone.
