A 16-year-old girl was killed in a single-car crash, Westport police said Monday.
Police said a car driven by a 16-year-old boy crashed into a telephone pole and flipped over on Drift Road at about 11:30 p.m. Saturday.
Police said the girl and an 18-year-old man in the back seat were thrown from the car. The girl was killed.
NBC 10 has learned the girl's name is Erika Hall.
"All of a sudden I heard screeching tires, and a huge bang noise. Me and my friend ran down the road," said a neighbor who didn't want to be identified. "I was hoping it wasn't that bad, but then I saw the car flipped over on its roof. I knew it wasn't good when I saw the car, you know."
The driver and another 18-year-old man were treated at a hospital.
Police said the driver and the front-seat passenger were wearing seatbelts. Police said Hall and the other backseat passenger were not.
"Makes you really think about wearing your seatbelt all the time. It's said that it takes something like this to happen for you to think about it," the neighbor said.
A news release from Westport police did not include names of the driver or the other passengers. All four went to Westport High School.
The Bristol County District Attorney's Office told NBC 10 it is investigating whether the driver should have had passengers in the car because of his age. According to Massachusetts law, drivers need to have a license for six months before they can drive with passengers who aren't immediate family.
No charges have been filed. The cause of the crash was not immediately known.
The school is providing support and services for students struggling with the loss.
Hall's family described Erika as living to experience every joy the world had to offer.
Hall will be laid to rest on Saturday. Her family is asking in lieu of flowers that donations be made to the Westport Education Foundation.
