PROVIDENCE -

Scientists and medical professionals who study and treat Lyme disease and other tick-borne illnesses are scheduled to gather in Rhode Island.

The 15th annual Lyme & Tick-Borne Diseases Conference of the Lyme Disease Association and the Columbia Lyme and Tick-Borne Diseases Research Center is scheduled for the upcoming weekend in Providence.

The conference topics will include potential new ways to diagnose Lyme disease. There will also be a presentation on how the disease affects the brain, including presentations on suicide and Lyme disease.

State health officials tell The Providence Journal that about 800 Rhode Islanders get Lyme disease every year. They say that is six to eight times more than is publicly reported, because Rhode Island has stopped actively tracking the illness.
