Rhode Island held drug take-back events

Posted: Updated:
PROVIDENCE -

Law enforcement officials in Rhode Island held another statewide event intended to help residents dispose of their unused or expired prescription drugs safely.

Medications were dropped off Saturday at many locations across the state, including police departments in Providence, Pawtucket, Warwick and Newport. Some communities accepted drop-offs at local pharmacies. They are done anonymously.

The event was held as part of the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration's National Prescription Drug Take-Back Day. Officials say 3.4 million pounds of pills have been turned in nationwide since 2010.

Attorney General Peter Kilmartin says prescription drug abuse is an epidemic and can often lead to the use of illicit drugs like heroin. He says there has been a great local response to previous take-back events.
