Brown U. president reacts to criticism over rape

Posted: Updated:
PROVIDENCE -

Brown University is accelerating its review of campus safety after a student criticized the Ivy League school over how it handled her allegation that another student had raped her.

The alleged victim protested the university's handling of the incident during a rally with supporters Tuesday. She said she reported the incident to Brown officials shortly afterward and the alleged attacker was suspended until next fall, despite a recommended two-year suspension.

University President Christina Paxson says in a campus-wide message she sent Saturday that "sexual assault at Brown is not tolerated."

She said the student accused of rape has decided not to seek readmission to Brown for next fall.

Paxson says a review of safety policies and procedures already planned for the coming academic year will be accelerated and will include significant input from students.
