NEW BEDFORD, Mass. -

Two people were taken to the hospital with serious injuries after their car crashed into a pole on Bradley Road in New Bedford on Thursday night.

The conditions of the victims were not immediately known.

Police said the car split the pole upon impact. It took rescue crews about 15 minutes to get the victims out of the car.

"I heard the screeching of tires. I heard a thump. I knew it was a crash. I ran over to the window. I saw the accident scene and crews were on scene already," said Bert Melo of New Bedford.

New Bedford police said a Freetown police officer in a cruiser had been trying to stop the car. Police said the car was spun around from the direction it was going as it hopped the curb and wrapped around the pole.

Melo said he doesn't know what caused the crash, but is familiar with Bradley Road.

"The speed limit is 30 mph on this road and they speed here all the time. Every time I pull into my driveway someone is behind me doing 50," he told NBC 10.

The crash remains under investigation.
