RI encourages residents to celebrate Earth Day

Posted: Updated:
Rhode Island officials are urging state residents to celebrate Earth Day by taking part in a cleanup or enjoying nature in state parks and beaches.

Department of Environmental Management Director Janet Coit says she hopes people participate in Earth Day events planned across the state Tuesday. She says Rhode Island has 14 state beaches, seven major state parks, 40,000 acres of state forestland, over 400 miles of shoreline and numerous bike paths.

Coit also is urging families to sign up for The Great Outdoors Pursuit, a summer-long game aimed at getting children and parents outdoors and involved in more physical activity.

Gov. Lincoln Chafee will be celebrating Earth Day later in the day in Newport, at an event recognizing people who planted 98,000 daffodils around the city last October.
