Rock and Reel competition coming to Pawtucket

Posted: Updated:
PAWTUCKET, R.I. - The winning entry in last year's first incarnation of Rock & Reel was a music video called "Get Out".

It was directed by filmmaker Dana Goodman, and he was randomly matched with musician Phil Ayoub.

"I had lived with the song for so long that I wanted to experience someone else's vision of it. So I was happy to do whatever she wanted," Ayoub said.

"Do a little more meaningful spin on it as far as not just getting out and enjoying life, but get out of your comfort zone, get over something that has been a challenge for you," Goodman said.

They were up against eight other teams to produce a music video in 72 hours.

"We are open to country, rock, hip-hop, jazz, whatever it is. We want variety frankly. We're encouraging it," said Mark Greene of the Rhode Island Film Collaborative, which sponsors Rock and Reel.

"Especially nowadays with YouTube. It was something that I should have done a lot earlier, but hadn't done so this was about time," Ayoub said.

The experience for Goodman was different than shooting a traditional film.

"It gave us a lot more leeway to kind of have a good time with it rather than having to worry about every single shot," she said.

Some musicians or band members will all meet at 7 p.m. on May 2 at the Pawtucket Visitor's Center. They'll be put into teams. Then after that, they'll have three days to make a music video and submit a completed product by 8 p.m. Monday.

"We thought it would be an interesting way to incorporate more people into local arts community because musicians and filmmakers don't necessarily interact or collaborate very often," Greene said.

Last year's $1,000 first place prize is not available this year. This year, the winner will get gift cards and bragging rights.
