Police: Remains of baby found on New Bedford street

NEW BEDFORD, Mass. - Police said Friday that the remains of a baby have been found on a New Bedford street.

Chief David Provencher said the remains were found at about 6:30 p.m. Friday by a resident  outside of a 3-story home at 1065 County St.

According to the Bristol County DA's office they are asking for assistance locating the mother of the infant, they believe she may need medical attention.

The infant has been identified as a caucasian female, weighing approximately six pounds.

Massachusetts State Police and the Bristol County District Attorney's office have staff on the scene assisting in the investigation.

The State Medical Examiner's office will perform an autopsy this weekend and hopes to have more information on the case.
