Residents warned of consumer scam that targets grandparents

Posted: Updated:

A consumer alert has been issued by the Rhode Island Attorney General's Office.

Officials are warning residents that the so-called "grandparent scam" is back in Rhode Island.

The scammers call elderly residents posing as a grandchild, police officer or attorney. The scammer then claims there has been an emergency and their grandchild needs money sent immediately by wire transfer.

To avoid getting scammed, the attorney general's office suggests that you always ask callers to identify themselves by name. Never volunteer information over the phone and refuse to send money via wire transfer.
