Episcopal Diocese of Massachusetts is electing a new bishop

Posted: Updated:
The Episcopal Diocese of Massachusetts is electing a new bishop.

Clergy and lay delegates from parishes and missions across the diocese are scheduled to gather Saturday at the Cathedral Church of St. Paul in Boston to select from among seven candidates.

The diocese with 185 congregations in the eastern part of the state is seeking a new bishop to replace the retiring M. Thomas Shaw, who has led the local church since 1994.

Clergy and lay delegates vote separately. A majority of votes on the same ballot from both clergy and laypersons is required for election.

If the convention does not pick a new bishop Saturday, it will reconvene on April 12.

The new bishop will be consecrated on Sept. 13.
