A former national chess master from Providence is accused of having sex with a 14-year-old girl from Foster whom he met online.

David Harris was charged with indecent solicitation and third-degree sexual assault. He was arraigned Tuesday and released on bail. He's not allowed to have contact with minors or use the Internet.

NBC 10 learned Harris is the director of the Blackstone Chess Club and Academy, a group that organizes chess tournaments at local schools.

But police said Harris met the girl teen online.

It was an anonymous source that notified police that a 14-year-old girl was signed up on OK Cupid, an adult dating site. On her profile she said she had a sexual encounter with a man in his late 50s.

State police Capt. Kevin O'Brien said that tip was crucial.

"(If) they're aware of a child that's communicating with an adult for inappropriate purposes, that's something that we need to be aware of," O'Brien said.

The teen told police she met Harris through Chat-Avenue's teen chat room, which is only for kids between the ages of 13 and 19.

According to court documents, the teen started chatting with Harris in the fall and told him numerous times she was 14. She told police Harris didn't care.

The girl said Harris took her to his Providence home, where the alleged sexual encounter took place.

State police said they seized computers and a cellphone from Harris's home.
