A Rhode Island man was sentenced Wednesday to serve eight years in prison in a fatal drunken driving crash.

James Mulcahey pleaded guilty in Washington County Superior Court to one count of DUI death resulting in a crash that killed Donna Eddy of Warwick.

The victim's daughter, Sarah Eddy, had a message for Mulcahey in court.

"So Mr. Mulcahey, I hope you enjoy your last 14 days of freedom, because the next five to eight years are going to be painfully slow for you," Eddy said.

Prosecutors said Mulcahey was drunk when his car crashed head on into Donna Eddy's car on Route 2 in South Kingstown on Aug. 30, 2012.

"I think everyone can agree that the wrong person died that night. But unfortunately, my mom is dead, and what is even more unfortunate is that you are still alive, and the world is a worse place because of it," Eddy said.

Mulcahey sat, flanked by his lawyers during Eddy's impassioned statement. When it came his turn to say something, he deferred to his defense team.

"With the court's permission, I'll just simply extend the condolences of Mr. Mulcahey along with his council to the family of Ms. Eddy. He is sincerely sorry," said Mulcahey's lawyer.

"A part of me wanted to hear him say he was sorry, but at the same time, it wouldn't have done anything. It's past that," Eddy said. "It was clear that he wasn't sorry about killing my mom. He was just more sorry for the fact that he's in trouble."

Eddy said the family is happy the proceedings are over, but they were not satisfied with an eight-year sentence.

"She was very selfless. The complete opposite of the person that killed her," Eddy said.

Mulcahey was granted a three-week stay of sentence so he can find care for his ailing father. He was ordered to surrender April 23.
