PROVIDENCE -

The Providence Police Department said Friday that the 2010 Toyota Prius reported stolen by Democratic candidate for governor Clay Pell and his wife, Michelle Kwan, has been recovered.

The car was found Thursday night in North Providence, about a month after it disappeared.

"Providence police called me. We went there to go pick it up. We had it towed back to the Providence Police Department so they could process the vehicle. And when they were done processing it, they called us back up and had us bring it back here," said Michael Salvatore of State Towing Service.

The Prius is now sitting in a Providence lot.

According to a North Providence police report, the car was found in the back parking lot of an apartment building on Josephine Street after police received a call about a suspicious vehicle.

They found the car with the passenger window broken, apparently by a desktop computer monitor that was on the ground next to the car.

"What the evidence would show is that it was more than likely broken in North Providence," said Providence police Maj. David Lapatin.

Lapatin said police don't yet know if anything was stolen from the car.

The car was found on a street where Pell was just a week after it was first reported stolen. Pell was with Democrats at Il Fornello on March 3. The restaurant is a few doors down from the apartment complex.

The restaurant's owner said he thinks it's a strange coincidence.

"I think we would have (noticed the car), especially with all the snow and the snow plows and things like that. I think that somebody would have noticed it," said Tony Lanni of Il Fornello.

There was no immediate comment from the Pells.
