TAUNTON, Mass. -

Fire investigators spent Friday trying to determine the cause of a fire that broke out at a Taunton bar.

The fire at Bobby's Place on Weir Street started at about 2 a.m.

"When I got here, there were heavy flames and the fire was getting out of control," said Deputy Chief Scott Dexter of the Taunton Fire Department.

The fire started outside one of the back doors.

Investigators said it was fortunate the bar had a police detail. Officers noticed the flames right away and called the fire department, potentially sparing the rest of the building from catching fire.

"Every second counts. I don't even want to think what would've happened if police weren't here to call it in," Dexter said.

Investigators said because the fire started on the outside of the building makes it potentially suspicious.

Tenants who live in apartments above the bar worry the bar's reputation makes it target.

"A lot of people don't like this place because it is a gay bar. People are still hypocritical," said Jordan Mort, who's one of 11 people living above Bobby's Place.

The bar's owner woke Mort up by pounding on his door just after 2 a.m.

"I honestly thought about elementary school, get out, don't worry about what you have. I went without a jacket and without shoes," Mort said.

Cleanup crews spent the morning boarding up the back of the building.

It remains unclear when tenants will be able to move back in or when Bobby's Place will reopen.
