Firefighters across our area are mourning the loss of two Boston firefighters who were killed Wednesday.

New Bedford firefighters were on the scene of a house fire not long after hearing that two Boston firefighters had died.

“We feel it all the way down here as well,” Lt. Steve Peixoto told NBC10.  “Our hearts and our prayers and our thoughts go out to our brothers in Boston on a tragic day like today.”

The deadly Boston fire was fueled by a fierce wind.  The wind was an issue at the New Bedford fire, too.  It’s just one of many dangers firefighters could face when they leave the station for a call.

Peixoto said, “It's always in the back of your mind, but generally you don't think about it.  You have a job to do and you just do it.  Say your prayers every day in the morning and do what you  have to do.”

A similar response from Providence firefighters union president Paul Doughty.  “It's always in the back of your mind, but it can almost paralyze you if you focus on it too much.  You think about it but you put it where it belongs and you try to get the job done.  That's what those guys did today.”

Doughty says there's a bond between the Providence and Boston departments.  “There's a lot of camaraderie.  There's events that we travel to with them together.  So there's a lot of friends up there.  And we do the same work.  So it strikes home.  We just think about the families and everyone that's affected from a tragedy like this.”
