FAIRHAVEN, Mass. -

A woman was taken to the hospital after police said she drove into the water in Fairhaven.

Police said 32-year-old Tami Pitter told officers she became lost as she was driving west on Bridge Street at about 5:15 a.m. Wednesday.

She told police she had mistaken a boat ramp as a continuation of the road and drove into the water. Police said the car was submerged in about 6 feet of water.

According to police, the woman freed herself by climbing out of the passenger side window, and made her way to shore.

A tow truck eventually pulled the car out of the water.
