PROVIDENCE -

The Rhode Island House of Representatives will take up the issue of making Rhode Island-style calamari the Ocean State's official appetizer on Wednesday.

The bill was introduced by state Rep. Joe McNamara on Feb. 12 and is scheduled for hearing Wednesday before the Health, Education and Welfare committee. Similar legislation passed the House last year but died in the Senate.

McNamara, a Warwick Democrat, said the bill is an easy way to celebrate Rhode Island's fishing and restaurant industries. He said the state should be proud to have the largest squid fleet on the East Coast. The state's squid catch is shipped to all 50 states and around the world.
