Aquarium raising money to move seal to Conn.

Posted: Updated:

Mystic Aquarium is trying to raise at least $15,000 to move a northern fur seal from California to Connecticut.

The aquarium said Ziggy Star was found barely alive on a Mendocino beach in April.

The seal was treated at The Marine Mammal Center in Sausalito, but testing determined she has a serious neurological condition that prevents her from being released into the wild.

Mystic Aquarium offered to give Ziggy Star a permanent home in its Pacific Northwest Exhibit, where she will live with seven harbor seals and two male northern fur seals.

Ziggy Star is otherwise healthy, but her condition affects her ability to process images correctly and coordinate her movements.

The aquarium said it will cost at least $15,000 to move her to Connecticut and care for her. Donations can be made online at
