Though not on the scale of the missing Malaysia Airlines jetliner, a private jet vanished on a flight from Vermont to Rhode Island in 1971.

The Rockwell 1121 Jet Commander departed Burlington International Airport at about 8 p.m. Jan. 27, 1971, bound for T.F. Green Airport in Warwick. It then disappeared from radar.

The plane is presumed to have crashed in Lake Champlain. Two crew members and three passengers were on board.

The search for the plane was called off Feb. 4, 1971. News reports from the time said a new search began a week later near Mitchell Mountain, N.Y., when a "glimmer" of light was spotted in an aerial view.

The source of the reflection was never determined, and the wreckage of the plane has never been located.
