Exit 22 reopens ahead of Monday commute

Posted: Updated:
PROVIDENCE -

The morning commute on Interstate 95 in Providence was not as bad as expected, after state officials reopened a busy exit early after weekend construction work.

State Department of Transportation officials closed exit 22 from I-95 southbound Saturday morning as crews installed two sections of concrete bridge deck as part of the $150 million replacement of the Providence Viaduct. Lengthy traffic jams were reported.

The exit was expected to remain closed Monday morning as the new concrete cured and officials expected a rough commute. But the exit was reopened Sunday afternoon after officials determined the new sections were strong enough.

DOT officials said about 32,000 vehicles use exit 22 every day to get to downtown Providence, the Providence Place mall and the connector to routes 6 and 10.
